On March 17, 1992, the RiconAgra Group organized a special event to showcase a typical day in their mining operations, offering attendees a rare behind-the-scenes look at the processes involved in extracting valuable minerals. The focus of the day was on bentonite, a type of absorbent clay with numerous industrial applications. Visitors were guided through various stages of the mining workflow, including surveying, excavation, and material transport, providing a comprehensive understanding of the scale and complexity of such operations.
The highlight of the day was a planned demolition, a dramatic and carefully orchestrated event designed to break through a rock barrier and access a new section of bentonite-rich earth. Safety was paramount, with strict protocols in place and a designated viewing area for observers. The explosion was not only a technical feat but also a visual spectacle, demonstrating the precision and power of controlled blasting in modern mining
Following the demolition, the mining crew swiftly transitioned into the next phase of operations—carving out the newly exposed bentonite deposits. Heavy machinery, including excavators and loaders, moved in to begin the extraction process. The team worked efficiently to remove the loosened material, capitalizing on the momentum created by the successful blast. This phase required careful coordination to ensure both productivity and safety, as the freshly fractured terrain could present unpredictable conditions. After the tour concluded, the group made their way back to La Engordia, where a nostalgic scene awaited. A Mitsubishi 2-6-0 steam locomotive had just arrived, pulling a small mixed train composed of both passenger and freight cars.
